Shri Umamaheshwara Seva Trust (R), Hosagundha

Hosagunda, a tiny village in Sagara taluk of the Shivamogga district, Karnataka has an important place in the history of Karnataka. The Rulers of this area were popularly called as the Hosagunda Kings. They ruled this region between the 9th and 13th centuries. Based on history & the style of architecture (Kalyana Chalukya), It is believed that Sri Umamaheshwara Temple and other Shrines were built by various Kings of Hosagunda during their regime. The Capital City of Hosagunda lost its original glory after the downfall of the Hosagunda Dynasty. All these majestic Temples built by them got neglected as the local populace migrated from there and the entire area got covered by dense forest throwing these Temples into dilapidated condition. The entire region was devoid of any development for several centuries.

But these ancient Temple ruins got a new lease of life with arrival of Sri CMN Shastry and his wife Smt Shobha N Shastry from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada to Hosagunda by buying a piece of agriculture land adjacent to the thick forest where these ruins of various Shrines were situated. Under the inspiration, instructions and guidance of Vedic scholar Sri Katte Parameshwara Bhatt and CMN Shastry's father and Vedic scholar Sri Cha.Mu. Ishwara Shastry, the Shastry couple formed Sri Umamaheshwara Seva Trust on March 30th, 2001, to take up the renovation and rejuvenation works. On 4th May 2001, a Shivalinga (Sacred Stone) collected from Narmada river was brought from Varanasi and installed in the sanctum sanctorum of Umamaheshwara Temple, which was followed by daily worship at the Shrine.

Between 2001 and 2005, ruins, idols, stone inscriptions, of many more Shrines such as Sri Mahishamardhini, Sri Veerabhadhra, Sri Kanchikalamma, Sri Prasannanarayana, Sri Lakshmiganapathi etc. were discovered in the surroundings. During November 2005 all these Idols where shifted to a make- shift temple (Balalaya) so that complete restoration, reconstruction and new construction could take place as required in their respective original places. It has been 18 years since Hosagunda started the journey of revival and a new milestone has been reached. The once-neglected region of Hosagunda is now all set to create history again – the completely dilapidated Temples of Sri Umamaheshwara and associate Deities Sri Mahishamardini , Sri Veerabhadra, Sri Ganapathi , Sri Subrahmanya and other Deities Sri Kanchikalamma, Sri Laxmiganapathi are now completely restored with some of them newly built, and are ready to be dedicated to the Universe.

With the Divine Blessings and proficient guidance of Jagadguru Shankaracharya AnanthaSri Vibhushitha Sri Sri Sri Bharati Teertha Mahaswamiji and His Karakamala Sanjatha Jagadguru AnanthaSri Vibhushitha Sri Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji of Sringeri Dakshinaamnaaya Sri Sharada Peeta, the re installation of all Deities presently being worshipped in the make shift Temples, at their original Shrines along with various spiritual and religious ceremonies will be held between Swastishri Vikari Samvatsara, Mesha Masa, Chaitra Krishna Dashami Monday, 29th April 2019 and Mesha Masa, Chaithra Krishna Chaturdashi 03rd May 2019. The punarprathista (re-installation) of idols will be performed on Mesha Masa, Chaithra Krishna Dwadashi Wednesday May 1st at Abhijin Muhurtha while on Mesha Masa, Chaithra Krishna Thrayodashi Thursday May 2nd at 10:30 a.m. Mithuna Lagna Jagadguru AnanthaSri Vibhushitha Sri Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji, will perform Jeevakalashabhisheka and Maha Kumbabisheka.

An enormous amount of effort has been put in by the Founder Trustees Sri CMN Shastry and Smt Shobha N Shastry, Trustees and committee members of Sri Umamaheshwara Seva Trust, to bring back the fame of this "Temple Town" by renovating and restoring these Temples, thereby, creating an approximation of "Heaven on Earth". It is our duty to applaud the noble and holy work done by them
