History of Hosagunda

India's historical legacy is replete with majestic temples and sophisticated architecture. However, it is painful to witness these societal treasures being reduced to ruins. The scenario in Hosagunda is no different !

Tucked away in a remote corner of the Western Ghats, Hosagunda's beautiful temples have been all but lost to neglect. Once the land of royal dynasties, Hosagunda is a place of historical & religious importance, with many temples dating back a thousand years.

Situated amid a lush green forest, around sixty (60) kms from Shimoga, Karnataka (Southern India) and around sixteen (16) kms from Sagar, these magnificent temples and stone inscriptions narrate tales of a bygone era. They speak of royal traditions, of a culturally rich and spiritually oriented society and of a town that served as a capital for more than three hundred (300) years.

The name "Hosagunda" literally means "a new locality on elevated land". Epigraphic records pertaining to this ancient town indicate that it was newly built as a capital city and hence was named Hosagunda.

Unfortunately, unable to withstand the relentless march of time, today this priceless legacy is in ruins. The monuments and inscriptions have been buried and are on the verge of vanishing altogether. They are crying out for support, to maintain their very existence.

Hosagunda is waiting for a breath of freshness and prosperity, waiting to realize the dream of renovation and reconstruction and reinventing of lost splendor. To convert this place into "an abode of peace", a paradise for every human inclination - for peace; for religious and spiritual inclination; for reliving a bygone era; for experiencing nature and for plain clean fun. Thus making it a "MUST VISIT" place for everyone.
